Division Chief
James G. Chalifoux serves as Chief of the Trial Division in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, bringing nearly thirty years of prosecutorial experience to the forefront of our felony litigation bureaus. His professional ambit includes all manner of homicides, sexual assaults, child abuse, shootings, weapons possession, burglary, robbery, and virtually every other aspect of major crime.
Known for his expertise in high-profile violent crime cases, he has built a reputation as a leading trial attorney in Suffolk County, with notable successes in homicide and organized crime prosecutions.
Chief Chalifoux graduated from Hamilton College and then received his Juris Doctorate at Albany Law School of Union University. In 1993, Chief Chalifoux joined the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, initially serving in the District Court Bureau and the Case Advisory Bureau.
Chief Chalifoux was promoted to the Major Crime Bureau where he handled violent street crime cases, and was later transferred to the Public Integrity Bureau, where he prosecuted government corruption cases. In 2005, Chief Chalifoux joined the Homicide Bureau, where he prosecuted high-profile cases such as the Medford pharmacy murders involving David Laffer.
In 2010, Chief Chalifoux was promoted to Deputy Bureau Chief of the Major Crime Bureau. In 2020, he became the Deputy Bureau Chief of the Homicide Bureau where he remained until being promoted to Division Chief in January 2022.
Chief Chalifoux lectures at Hamilton College, Touro Law School, SUNY Stony Brook, and Suffolk County Community College. He is also actively engaged with the community including organizations such as Parents of Murdered Children. Chief Chalifoux also assists with the Suffolk County Civilian Police Academy, and participates in News 12 panels addressing gang issues in the community.
